MCC Minute — Witnesses Week 5
Foundation:
When followers of Jesus take seriously the call to be witnesses, Jesus is glorified, people are saved, and the church grows.
Recap:
For the last few weeks, we have looked at the mission-critical call to be witnesses for Jesus in our world. Even if we are uncertain in our abilities to articulate the Truth of Jesus, we have a responsibility to do so. For those of us who are intimidated at the thought of telling others about Jesus, we can begin by sharing our experience with Him. Then, we must move beyond that to sharing the Gospel—regardless of if we feel prepared or if it is in a location or to people we never expected. Being a faithful witness is an invitation to come and die to our will so that His will takes precedent.
This Week’s Question:
But what’s the result of that? What happens when we take seriously the call to be witnesses, tell our story, share the Gospel, and die to our will? We want to know that the sacrifices we make are going to matter. What is the payoff?
Scripture (Acts 2:1–47):
We need to be empowered by God to accomplish anything of significance for God. The beautiful thing is that He will never call us to do something that He will not equip us to do. His power is at its best when we are at our weakest, most vulnerable, and uncertain.
The disciples received the power to be witnesses when the Holy Spirit arrived. Some thought they were drunk, but Peter boldly stood and declared that Jesus is Lord. Many rejected the message, but about three thousand people received it, repented, and were baptized that day.
The disciples who took seriously the command of Jesus to be His witnesses saw the result: Jesus was glorified, people were saved, and the church grew.
Live it this Week:
The question from the beginning was, “What is the result of my sacrifice?” The answer: Jesus is glorified, people are saved, and the church grows.
This means we have a decision to make. Will we continue to do things like we have in the past, or will we, from this moment forward, take seriously His call to be witnesses in our town, neighborhood, nation, and world? If we will not, nothing will change. But if we do, if we truly take this command seriously, everything changes.
Is telling my story, sharing the Gospel, and dying to my will worth someone’s soul?
This Week’s Prayer:
Let today be the day where we hear the word of the Lord and repent, as those who heard Peter in Acts 2. Let today be the day that our hearts are broken for the state of our community, nation, and world. Let today be the day we choose to die to ourselves and live for His will. If we do that, I truly believe we will see a radical change.
When followers of Jesus take seriously the call to be witnesses, Jesus is glorified, people are saved, and the church grows.
